Doodle FAQ

How fast does dog hair typically grow?

Typically 1/4” per month.

How often should my dog be brushed?

At least every three days, if not daily.

Why are Doodles more expensive?

As much as I love Poodles, their hair is curly and can be tricky to groom meaning they require extra time and very specific tools- they are typically a very expensive dog to have groomed. Since Doodles are crossed with Poodles they tend to have thick coats that require more time and attention. The cotton-like hair that is often the result of the cross (but not always!) is prone to matting that can be easy to miss. At the end of the day, cotton-like hair takes more time which is reflected in the price.

Grooming Routine

How often you should groom your doodle depends on what you want your doodle to look like. If you are trying to grow the coat out, I recommend coming in at least every 4 weeks for a Bath & Brush.

Short Length (less than 1/4”):

  • Hair cut every 6 weeks to maintain the length.

  • Hair cut every 8 weeks if brushing is not being done at home and you like simple routine shave downs.

  • If brushing is being done at home, the frequency is up to you.

Medium Length (3/8”-5/8”):

  • Hair cut every 4-6 weeks to maintain the length.

Long Length (3/4”-2”)

  • Hair cut every 4 weeks to maintain the length.

Full Coat (2”+)

  • A light trim every 4 weeks and a brush out done by a groomer every 2 weeks.

Please note:

Doodles kept on this schedule typically have the most success and avoid the dreaded “doodle shave down”. I am more than happy to help you achieve your Floofy Doodle Dreams which is why I have set up a schedule based on my experience with Doodle coats.

At Home Care

Brush and comb daily. Below are areas that are easy to miss:

  • Armpits- Lift the front arm and stretch it out in a natural position, gently comb through this area.

  • Toes- Spread the toes out and use a baby comb to make sure the paws and toes are tangle free.

  • Ears- Run the comb from the top of the ear to the bottom, making sure there are no tangles. Then the flip the ear over, revealing the canal, and comb outward from the canal to the ends of the hair. Tangles tend to hide behind the ears so make sure you use a baby comb and move the ear into various positions.

  • Tail- Run the comb from the base of the tail to the end, making sure the comb through in sections. Tangles easily hide under and at the base of the tail, so making sure you use your fingers to feel it’s knot-free is essential.

*If you find any tangles, do not cut them out with scissors as you will risk injuring your dog. Contact your groomer, they can assist in either getting the tangle out pain-free or helping you do so.
